Low Sulphur Fuel Surcharge
We have advised previously regarding new legislation coming into place from
January 1st within the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) in North Europe.
The legislation restricts the maximum amount of sulphur in fuel that is burned by
vessels within the SECA area, which is forcing carriers to switch to more expensive
cleaner fuels, or adapt vessels to clean the exhaust gases.\
The new regulations are expected to produce a significant positive impact on the environment;
Sulphur emissions are responsible for many health issues. However
such legislation always tend to come at a financial cost.
To offset the additional costs that will be incurred, carriers have announced a new
surcharge called the Low Sulphur Fuel Surcharge that will be effective January 1st.
This will be for all trades with origins or destinations within the control area.
At present the actual amounts have still not been set in stone, although most
carriers have announced their intention to charge anything from $22 to $85 per
TEU. LCL charges will be on a pro rata basis.
We will continue to monitor these in the lead up to the New Year when we will be
able to confirm the prices being introduced.
